PLUS: How you can apply these ideas to the newsletter you already operate

I was going to write an intro (usually write them the morning of the send).

But it’s my son’s 5th birthday today. So instead, I’ll be jumping on trampolines for 2 hours straight with him.

3 Newsletter Ideas That Will CRUSH 👀

(And don’t worry.

If you’re like me and the last thing you need is to start another newsletter..

I’ll talk through why these are good ideas.

And how you can apply it to the one you already operate.)

Here are the 3 ideas:

  1. Trivia 📊

  2. Fun Facts 🧠

  3. Riddles/Puzzles 🧩

To create the most value, you could run all three under the same umbrella.

Or you can pick one and run with it.

Why these work 👇️

Here’s why these work from an operations, monetization, and consumer perspective.

Operations ⚙️

  • They are light on content production (read: quick and easy to create)

  • A combo of AI + virtual assistants can make this virtually effortless to operate

  • You can do this in 1-2 hours/week of work once a system is in place

Monetization 💰️

  • High open rates = more impressions

  • Daily send = more ad inventory = more revenue

  • Low paid acquisition costs (easily sub $1.50/sub)

  • You can cross-promote each of them (people who like one are likely to enjoy the others)

  • This type of content lends itself better to referral networks like beehiiv boosts and Sparkloop as acquisition channels and actually see high engagement

Consumer 👨‍💻

  • Quick to read (60 sec or less)

  • Daily send = habit forming

  • Job to be done: Spark the curiosity itch + close the loop every day. By learning something bite-sized, it’s dopamine inducing every time.

  • My favorite reason: They create enjoyable social moments in real life.

    • Learn a fun fact? You want to share it with friends or coworkers.

    • Trying to solve a riddle? Share it with your team and solve together.

Cost to operate:

  • beehiiv: $0 for the first 2500 subscribers

  • Claude or ChatGPT: free

The http

The above newsletters are crushing it with a general audience, which can work.

But there’s even more opportunity if you focus on a specific niche:

  • Trivia for dog lovers 🐶

  • Fun facts for tech nerds 🤓

  • Riddles for smart people 😉

Niching down does 2 things:

  1. Makes it more appetizing to certain advertisers

  2. Makes it more appealing to consumers

Principles to Apply to Your Newsletter 📈

So..what if you’re not going to launch a newsletter from scratch?

Consider these principles:

  1. Moment of Delight: Trivia, fun facts, solving a puzzle. They create lightbulb moments and sparks of delight. The Hustle did it with Shower Thoughts. Many sites do this with “On this day in history.” How can you create a moment of delight for your subscribers?

  1. Light to Write, Light to Read: All of these ideas are easy to create and easy to consume, which makes a daily send reasonable. Even if you send less frequently, what can you do to make your newsletter easier to write and read? What’s your end goal? Can you accomplish it in half as many words as you typically write? What’s the fastest way you can solve a problem or bring delight to your audience?

  1. Shareability: This is related to #1. What would you do differently with your newsletter if you optimized for how often readers share it? What would you have to do to make it so good people couldn’t help but share it? What section would you add to your newsletter?

  • In general, people share things that:

    • Make them laugh

    • Teach them something novel + surprising

    • Teach them something useful

Now go launch a newsletter or make your current one better.

Cheers,
